Southern Jaunt III - Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague

Since there are a lot of sites to explore and things to do in and around Davao, we decided to visit the sites that we failed to go to the previous time we were in Davao. I give prior notice however to the fact that we did not use public transport throughout our stay in Davao, many thanks to the Buno family. Hence, I may not be able to give much information regarding directions and fares.

Welcome to the Shrine

With our Pearl Farm tour already booked, we went straight from Gaisano to the Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague up in the hills of Matina. As informed by Tita Nelia, the property where the Shrine is located is owned by the family of a former local official of Davao. Over the years, they have developed the area and now, the place has become one of the famous tourist destinations in Davao. Tita Nelia also said that the place also serves as a pilgrimage site every Holy Week. Nonetheless, entrance to the Shrine remains free of charge.

The Shrine is also a perfect place for those who simply wanted solitude and tranquility. We were welcomed by the gentle sound of the blowing wind and only the intermittent and hushed sighs of the trees that surround the area would somehow break the silence. Large ferns that cling to the trees also add a distinctive aura to the place, making it perfect for those who would want a retreat from the hustle and bustle of a fast-paced city life. It really is Shangri-La to those who long to have a moment of reflection and examine one’s faith.

Chapel

After saying our prayers in one of the open-air chapels, we decided to explore the area. As usual, I tried to set the camera and take a picture of myself when all of a sudden a small, presumably poisonous, snake appeared out of nowhere and decided to settle in my lens hood. Good thing it decided to come out when the caretakers of the place rushed to aid us. However, the snake was able to elude capture and settled on a fissure in the concrete steps.

took this shot....and then the snake appeared

We then proceeded to the pavilion at Catalina Park where an over-looking view of Davao Gulf beckons. Mount Apo is also visible on the distance. Thereafter, we spent time at the garden and took pictures with flowering plants serving as our background.

Happy to be here

Souvenirs for pilgrims/visitors are also available at the shop strategically located in the center of the place. And before you leave, do not forget to light your candles at the back of the souvenir shop.
