Southern Jaunt I - Davao City (DaWOW)

Davao City is considered as the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area. Although a busy business center, it nonetheless maintains its allure as one of the best places in terms of adventure and eco-tourism. Often referred to as the world's gateway to Mindanao, it is likewise known for the discipline and warmness of its people. But most of all, Davao City is home for our very good friend Ais.

"Hello Gani..."

Ais is happy to be home.

Incidentally, during this trip, we serve as living proof of the existence of the “Piso Fares” that AirPhilExpress offers. Having purchased 4 roundtrip tickets to Davao City from Manila for P19.00 per person or a total of P76.00, calling it luck would be an understatement. Too bad, our travel buddy / my best friend Gani was not able to make it because of unforeseen reasons. Nonetheless, Ais’ cousin-in-law Ivy, was able to join us during the trip.

It was a cold and rainy afternoon when we arrived in Davao. Looking at the peak of Mt. Apo as we prepare to land has taken away all that enmity I felt because of the “scampark” that we have to hurdle at NAIA Terminal 3. I'll just post a separate blog regarding this vicious scheme so that unsuspecting travellers will be warned.

Hunny...gorgeous as ever.

Ken, Ais’ brother fetched us at the airport. As we approach the parking area, we saw this very interesting sculpture of a Durian fruit, the inner part of which is artistically molded into images. I admit, I never knew that such monument existed as we arrived and left Davao City in the evening during our past trip two years ago. The magnificent work of art was made by Kublai Millan, one of the most respected artists in Mindanao.

A message written on a piece of concrete at the base of "The Durian" caught my attention. Allow me to share this wonderful message with you:

"To the Traveler
Whether coming or going
May you travel light even when your burden is heavy
May your heart be in its proper place
May you reach your destination safe and early
And may you always land on your own two feet."

"The Durian"

This made me smile, and despite being a mere traveller myself, made me feel at home in this wonderful place. It further heightened our excitement. Of course, I really can't wait to share with you the places that we'll visit, the friends that we'll meet along the way, and all the "out of our usual routine" experiences.

But for now, just enjoy the sights within Davao City that I was able to frame as we land in this very beautiful and peaceful city.

  1. The Davao river looks fantastic! Is it in that river where water rafting is been done?

  2. Yes...that is right. I think rafting starts somewhere in the Crocodile Park Complex.
