Underground Cemetery

On our way to the town of Liliw in Laguna, we passed by the town of Nagcarlan, which is famous for its one-of-a-kind attraction, the only Underground Cemetery in the Philippines.

The Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan was established by the Franciscan Missionaries, then headed by Fr. Vicente Velloc, in 1845. Visitors are greeted by a huge lawn. On the other end is the chapel, which is flanked by rows of tombs. The catacombs are found beneath the chapel which in itself is a historic site for serving as the meeting place of the Katipuneros during the Philippine Revolution against Spain.

Also, the fact that the red bricks used in building the area is still intact is just amazing. The place is truly a heritage site that we Filipinos can be truly proud of.
